Dorm Room Rut

When moving into a new college dorm, you are presented with a blank canvas that you are free to customize with your own personal style. However, this task can be daunting as you may not know where to start. Remember this: don't settle for a neutral color palette just because you are unsure or don't want to clash with you're roommate. It's where you're living too so you should treat it as such.

TIP: If you really don't know where to begin, contact your roommate and find some colors that you both enjoy and coordinate your room that way. When you have a color palette, it is easier to decide on what to add to the room. My roommate and I chose coral, light blue, and purple to follow and our room is by the far the best in out building.

Storage

Since you are sharing a space, some sort of storage unit is essential. These may be better in those neutral colors and try to stay away from clear bins. When you are able to see your stuff, the room looks more cluttered then it is. Also, search out tall, slender cabinets as they will take up less space.
I brought a locker from home and used command strips to add a monogrammed piece I made.

Personalize, Personalize, Personalize

Those small little personal elements are what will really bring your room to life. Whether its a small monogrammed piece or a picture of you and your best friend, it'll make your dorm feel like a room in your own home.

Marrowstone Island - Washington's hidden Treasure

Recently got back from a trip in Washington and had an amazing time. Being from Florida, I'm always looking for ways to get away from the heat and humidity. Visiting family is Washington was the perfect way to do this. I highly recommend visiting Marrowstone Island for yourself and immersing yourself in the Mountain lifestyle.

Located in the Olympic Peninsula, you are surrounded by 360 degree mountain views and are provided with gorgeous golden sunsets every evening. Travel about 20 minutes northwest of the Island, and you run into Port Townsend - the perfect old style downtown shopping area with boutiques located in buildings original to the area and reflect the character of the town. There was a perfect little bookstore here, which was my favorite place to stop anytime I had the chance.

Island Facts:

  • Population - 844
  • 6.3 square miles
  • 1 general store
  • Fort Flagler and Mystery Bay
Besides the sunsets, Fort Flagler is Marrowstones main attraction. There is a camp ground located near a beach and you can hike around woodsy trails to see old war bunkers in your free time. At the top of the trail, you'll run into the take of point for hand gliders for those of you looking for a thrill. Marrowstone also has a local winery for those who enjoy the finer things in life.

7 Things to do the Summer before College

I'm big on taking adventures so with college looming, it's important that we remember to live and not just focus on school, school, school. Sometimes you just need to kick back and see where life takes you. All the pictures feature me proving this can all be done in one summer ;)

1) Risk Your life

"Do one thing a day that scares you." - Eleanor Roosevelt. Ok so maybe not everyday, but at least once this summer, you should do something that gets your heart racing. Whether it's base-jumping, bungee jumping, or even skydiving - it's important that you remind yourself exactly what it means to live. Life is short, so why not jump out of a plane? I went skydiving and it was the best decision of my life. A once in a life time opportunity that I plan on doing again.

2) Rock Climbing

I highly recommend going to a rock climbing gym at least once this summer. Its a great way to stay in shape as well as train for the mountains if you ever find yourself near any. Rock Gyms can be find all across the country so I'm sure finding one won't be tough. http://www.indoorclimbing.com/ is a great place to find a gym near you.

3) Visit a Beach

Fortunately, I live 10 minutes from a beach, but if you aren't as lucky, I recommend finding one this summer. There's nothing like spending the day with the sand between your toes and the fresh ocean spray on your face.

4) Scuba Dive

Scuba diving gets its own category because there is honestly nothing like it. Once you submerge underwater and immerse yourself in the world beneath the surface, you really do see life differently. Scuba is also another great sport that works your body while you have a great time. I swear time passes so much quicker underwater because once you go under, you never want to return to the real world.

5) Run a 5k

Okay so I know it doesn't sound ideal but running 5ks are a great way to get the family together and take part in a community event. I personally think Fourth of July 5ks are the best and there will no doubt be one taking place near you. Just another great summer time activity that is a great work out and really makes you feel good.

6) Attend a Sporting Event/Concert

With the recent addition of the Orlando City professional men's soccer team to the MLS, I have taken up an addiction in attending their soccer games. Their home stadium in Orlando, Florida isn't that far from me so every chance I get, I find myself at their games. Sporting events are a great summer activity as they are great to attend with friends and can actually be pretty inexpensive. Another great way to get out of the house.

7) Travel

If you do nothing else this summer, at least be sure to travel. Traveling is the best form of education and the best way to gain life experience. Whether it's a 1 hour drive to the next town or a 10 hour flight across the Atlantic, just get off the couch and go see the world. Do it while you're young and reckless and see the world as such.
